A Sunrise Proposal Near Capitol Reef National Park | Utah Proposal Photographer
When Patrick first reached out to me, he already had the sweetest plan in mind. He wanted to surprise Kati with a proposal during their 9-year anniversary road trip through Utah's incredible national parks. Traveling from out of state, they were exploring some of Utah's most breathtaking landscapes, and he knew there couldn't be a more memorable place to ask her to marry him.
We spent weeks planning every detail to keep the proposal a surprise while making sure we found the perfect location. Originally, we planned for sunrise at Temple of the Sun near Capitol Reef National Park. As with many adventures in Southern Utah, plans changed when we found out the road was closed. We quickly switched to Moonscape Overlook, but even that changed at the last minute. To make sure Kati wouldn't suspect anything, we decided on a beautiful spot near Factory Butte instead.
Looking back, I truly think everything worked out exactly the way it was supposed to.
As a proposal photographer, one of my biggest goals is making sure the moment feels like it's yours—not a photoshoot. I photographed their proposal from a distance so they could completely soak in the moment together without feeling like a camera was right in front of them. Watching Kati realize what was happening, seeing the excitement on both of their faces, and witnessing such an emotional milestone was such an honor.
After the proposal, we spent time exploring the area together for portraits. Since the surprise was over, we drove over to Moonscape Overlook, the location we'd originally planned to use. It ended up being one of my favorite parts of the entire morning. The dramatic desert landscape, layered badlands, and endless views made the perfect backdrop for celebrating their engagement. These are some of my favorite images from the session because they showcase just how breathtaking this part of Utah really is.
One of my favorite things about photographing proposals is that every story is different. Sometimes plans have to change because of weather, road closures, or unexpected circumstances, but having someone there to help navigate those changes means you can stay focused on what matters most.
